Minister of Forestry and Natural Resources Nancy Tembo has today launched the Living Modified Organisms (LMOs) Testing Services for Chitedze Agricultural Research Station and Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Luanar).

Tembo says the Tonse Government is geared to regulate the effects caused by the LMOs in the country.

“I undertook a working visit to Chitedze Research Station where i launched the Living Modified Organisms (LMO) Testing Services for Chitedze Agricultural Research Station and Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources,”

“If not regulated, LMOs can cause adverse effects on biological diversity and pose serious risks to human health and the environment,” she says.

Tembo hails development partners for the project to be successful.

“Many thanks to our project partners RAEIN Africa with funding from United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Global Environment Facility (GEF),”she says.

Yesterday, Tembo engaged senior officials from her ministry to discuss among others, issues to do with carbon levy funds and enforcement of thin plastics ban.

“On the issue of thin plastics ban, i assured the officials of my support as i believe its not only sad but embarrasing to see thin plastics littered everywhere in our communities,”

“The time for impunity is over.
I am therefore confident that plastics manufacturers will obey the law. Those companies that will not cooperate will face the full might of the law,” she says.
