Malawi Vice President Dr Saulos Chilima has congratulated the President elect for the Republic of Zambia Hakainde Hichilema.

Hichilema has done what current Malawi President Dr Lazarus Chakwera did by winning elections last year when he was in opposition. Chakwera booted out the then president Professor Peter Mutharika.

The Zambia president elect has won the presidential elections after defeating incumbent president Edgar Lungu during elections held on Friday.

Chilima says Malawi is committed to continue with the Republic of Zambia under the leadership of Hichilema.

“Our sincere aspirations are for the continued cordiality and warmth between the people of our nations. Congratulations President elect Hakainde Hichilema.” Chilima says.

Opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema secured a stunning landslide victory over incumbent Edgar Lungu in Zambia’s presidential election, results showed on Monday.

The electoral commission said Hichilema got 2,810,777 votes against Lungu’s 1,814,201, with all but one of the 156 constituencies counted.

“I therefore declare that the said Hichilema to be president of Zambia,” electoral commission chairman, Esau Chulu, said in a packed results centre in the capital Lusaka.

That would make the third time that power has shifted peacefully from a ruling party to the opposition since the southern African country’s independence from Britain in 1964.

Across Zambia, celebrations broke out in the streets as Hichilema’s supporters wearing the red and yellow of his United Party for National Development (UPND) danced and sang, while drivers honked their horns.

Other African politicians who have so far congratulated Hichilima include Uganda’s opposition politician Robert Kyagulanyi and Raila Odinga of Kenya.

“Hearty congratulations to the Zambian President-elect, His Excellency Hakainde Hichilema. On behalf of all democracy loving Ugandans, I congratulate the people of Zambia on this momentous achievement. This is not only a Zambian victory, but a victory for Africa and democracy!” Bobi Wine tweets.
