Muslim On Death Row Sues For Being Served With Non-Halaal Food

Abdul Awkal is demanding halaal food in prison

A Muslim in the United States of America is suing the US government for serving him with non-halaal meals.

Abdul Awkal, who is on the death row after he was convicted in 1992 for murdering his estranged wife and brother-in-law, says that Ohio prison authorities are impeding on his liberty for serving him with non-halaal food when Jewish inmates get their korsher meals.

According to the New York Daily News, Awkal filed his papers at the federal court and the case is expected to go for trial in January 2012 and he has since been joined in the case by another Muslim inmate.

“The issue of eating halaal meals is especially important to me because I face a death sentence.” Awkal is quoted to have said in the court papers.

Ohio officials have told the New York Daily News saying that they recently removed pork from the menu but cannot afford to procure halaal meals due to budgetary constraints.

However, Awkal and his friend argues that vegetarian and non-pork meals are not good options for them but that their meals must be prepared according to Islamic Law.
