Presidential candidate, Peter Kuwani of Mbakuwaku Movement for Development (MMD) has asked Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC ) to disqualify President Peter Mutharika of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP ) and Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) in the fresh presidential elections held yesterday.
MEC Chairperson Dr Chifundo Kachale has confirmed receiving the complaint during the press briefing underway at MEC’s Main Tally Centre at College of Medicine Sports Complex in Blantyre.
Dr Kachale says Mr Kuwani needs the two to be disqualified for changing their running-mates which is against the Court Order.
The MEC boss says they will scrutinize the complaint and make a determination by the end of the day.
Dr Kachale has also warned Malawians to stop spreading fake results of the elections because it is only MEC that is mandated to declare a winner. He has also disclosed that no district has yet submitted results to the Main Tally Centre because every district is supposed to collect results from all polling centres before sending to the Main Tally Centre.
Dr Kachali says the transmission of the results from the districts to the Main Tally Centre is manual to avoid rigging allegations.
Unofficial results are indicating that MCP President Lazarus Chakwera is leading with DPP’s Peter Mutharika coming second.
