The president of the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) Party Atupele Muluzi has commended the Constitutional Court Judges for declaring that President Peter Mutharika was not duly elected in May, 2019.
The Judges led by Healey Potani have nullified the last year’s presidential elections case on the ground that the electoral processes involved were unconstitutional.
“I have been humbled by how the Constitutional Court has conducted their investigation into the 2019 Tripartite Elections and respect their findings,” says Muluzi.
He says the UDF leadership will meet to discuss next steps.
“At this stage no decisions will be made till we have had time to fully understand the implications of the pronouncement made by the Court,” he says.
Muluzi has further commended security agencies in the country.
“May I take this opportunity to again thank the Constitutional Court for their hard work and for the MDF and MPS personnel who have worked to keep people safe over the last few days,” he says.
He has also urged Malawians to maintain peace and order as they are waiting to hold fresh elections within a period of 150 days.
“Can I again appeal to all to maintain the peace and unity that we have been able to demonstrate over the last 8 months,” Muluzi says.
