Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) wants the Attorney General (AG) Kalekeni Kaphale to resign for being partisan.
Speaking during a press briefing today HRDC Chairperson Gift Trapence said the AG has really failed to do his Job as a law advisor of the government.
“For us we are worried that we have a partisan Attorney General. The issue of partisan was well articulated by the Courts, the Constitutional Court as well as the Supreme Court when they faulted the Attorney General to be partisan. What we expected from him was to resign but until now he hasn’t done that,”
“That is why we are not surprised that he wrote that letter to parliament. The letter that is more less than partisan. The letter that is blocking Malawians to have fresh elections in the country”, said Trapence.
Trapence also noted that if the Attorney General will not resign as they have asked him they will take another step.
“The issue is straight forward since the Courts decided on the matter but as HRDC we are talking to our lawyers because this is a Court decision that faulted him to be partisan and I think we will pick if from there when our lawyers advises us and if they advise us to go to court we will do that”,said Trapence.
Both Constitutional Court and Supreme Court faulted the Attorney General for being partisan and also for representing Malawi Electoral Commisson (MEC) in the high profile presidential elections case.
Meanwhile the Attorney General has not commented on what HDRC has said.
