The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC), has commended the new cohort of the Electoral Commission for the work done in driving the electoral process under very constricted circumstances considering the little time they had to undertake the national responsibility.
The Commission says it is their hope and prayer that the entire process will be completed to the satisfaction of Malawians and others of good will to their nation, that together, Malawians must strive for peaceful country where human rights are enjoyed by all.
The organization says the interim report from their team of observers countrywide applaud the general conduct of the voting process in all districts but noted cases of violence, logistical problems regarding delayed voting materials.
It says the Commission has noted with great concerns the employers who were reluctant to release their staff to vote, individuals being found in possession of national ID cards and certificates, for them and many others.
This is contained in a statement signed by its chairperson, Reverend Patrick Semphere.
In a statement, the Commission says their team observes the acts of violence associated with allegations of attempted vote rigging which occurred in Nkhotakota, Dowa, Mzuzu, Thyolpo and , Lilongwe that the Electoral Commission and the Malawi Police to investigate all cases and appropriately resolve.
A statement is recommending Mec to address all complaints received during the current election in a transparent manner.
The Commission is also urging the Malawi Police Service to swiftly investigate all incidence of violence and prosecute the suspects without regard to their political affiliation.
“The MDF and Malawi Police must uphold human rights principles when discharging their duties in relation to provision of security during this election,”reads a statement in part.
The Commission also advises the media to act responsibly and professionally by always desisting from broadcasts that will incite unrest and violence.
