The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has planned to conduct a comprehensive review of the boundaries of constituencies and wards to ensure that they are in compliance with the provisions.
In its earlier statement, MEC said as part of the process of the Constituency and Ward boundary review, it is holding sensitization meetings with electoral stakeholders in District Councils across the country.
Mec said it is holding the meetings with political parties, Members of Parliament (MPs), Councilors, CSOs, the media, traditional and faith leaders as well as representatives of women, youth, and persons with disabilities organizations in the respective District Councils hosting the sensitization meetings.
Recently, Mec Chairperson, Dr. Chifundo Kachale appeared before the Budget and Finance Committee of Parliament where he told the committee that the electoral body is facing a deficit of MK500 million to carry out the re-demarcation exercise of Constituency and Wards boundaries across the country.
In a statement signed by its Acting Chief Elections Officer, Harris Potani, MEC is calling for submissions on the review of Constituency and Ward boundaries for impartiality on the basis of ensuring that Constituencies contain approximately equal numbers of voters eligible to register with the subject only to considerations.
MEC is calling upon all political parties, professional associations, academia, religious and faith groups, organizations, and all interested stakeholders to submit views, opinions, and suggestions in writing to be considered during the review.
The electoral body is advising stakeholders to send the written submissions pertaining to specific Council offices saying submissions can also be dropped in envelops marked ‘’Constituency and Ward Boundary Review’’.
Mec says all other submissions pertaining to the process but not specific to a particular, Ward or Constituency should be submitted to its head office in Blantyre.
“The deadline for receiving submissions is 20th October 2021, submissions made outside the channel provided or after the consultative meetings will not be entertained, “reads a statement in part.
