Malawi President, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera who was the President of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) says poor countries commit to start effecting the deliverables as outlined in the Doha Programme of Action (DPoA).
Chakwera made the remarks today during the closing ceremony of the 5th United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC 5) in Doha, Qatar.
“The 5th United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) held in Doha since March 5 has come to a close today with renewed commitment and hope for Malawi’s development agenda,”
“Following the adoption of the Doha Political Declaration, all representatives from the 46 LDC member states head back to respective jurisdictions to immediately start effecting deliverables as outlined in the Doha Programme of Action (DPoA),” Chakwera says.
According to the president, the Programme of Action seeks to deliver among the key deliverables an online university; an investment promotion regime; a food stock holding mechanism; a crisis mitigation and resilience building mechanism; a graduation support package that ensures a smooth transition from the LDC category.
“Malawi, in particular, expects appropriate impact from various investments earmarked under the DPoA because it perfectly mirrors our Malawi2063 First 10-Year Implementation Plan (MIP-1) whose key milestones are raising the country’s income status to lower middle income level and attainment of most of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030,” he says.
He adds,” The summit has been a success because we have adopted a safe, secure and irreversible path towards graduation from the poverty bracket to middle income status,”
“I also held a number of bilateral meetings that will, without doubt, bear fruits in terms of foreign direct investment, trade opportunities and deeper cooperation.”
The 5th United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries was held under the theme “From Potential to Prosperity.”
