Islamic Relief Malawi embarked on its seasonal tradition of distributing food packs for iftar to the needy Muslims and other vulnerable people.
Speaking to Malawi Muslims Official Website Islamic Relief (IR) Head of Programs Sherifa Mia said the organization started the distributions earlier this year considering the fact that the country is locked in hunger crisis and 2500 households have benefited in Machinga district in the area of Traditional Authority Nyambi
.
Mia: The 2016/1437 Ramadan program requires humanitarian approach
“The 2016/1437 Ramadan program requires humanitarian approach since the masses are facing food shortage due to unproductiveness of the just ending growing season, dry spell as a major cause, especially the Southern region of Malawi, due to persist drought people did not harvest at all, rendering many people not having food for Iftar hence our food distribution interventions.” Mia said.
Inquisitively, Islamic Relief Head of Program had a case study where she visited some of the beneficiaries and observed that the food packs which are distributed are not enough for some of the families.
“We had a case study where we visited some of the households and observed that the distributed food package is not enough for many households, our policy as Islamic Relief is that if a single family has over five members, that family is entitled to receive two packs, but with limited resources they are still getting one food pack.” she said.

She also mentioned that the organization would take into consideration the insufficient issue and promised to improve the package in its next program.
“My message to Muslims, Malawians and those outside the country, Malawi is facing with hunger despite coming from growing season, so we should think about it and make food distribution a priority and that proper assessment is always made, to ensure that we give the right beneficiaries.”
