Malawi’s Vice President, Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima has urged Malawians to emulate the people who fought for the freedom they are enjoying today.
Chilima made the remarks today at Chilundu Memorial Tower while commemorating Martyrs’ Day in Nkhatabay district.
In his speech, Chilima reminded Malawians that the Martyrs left them with lessons: A lesson to love one another without limit, a lesson to stand up for what is right and a lesson to have courage in the face of any form of oppression.
“Yes, our Martyrs taught us to be persistent in fighting for what is good for our nation. They left us with a responsibility to jealously guard the gift of freedom which they secured for us by shedding their blood,” he said.
Chilima represented President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera who is in Doha, Qatar ahead of the 5th United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC 5).
Every 3 March is Martyrs’ Day in Malawi to honour the memory of those who died in the struggle to secure Malawi’s independence from the British Empire. The date is based on an uprising against British rule that took place on 3 March, 1959.
