President Dr Joyce Banda has said she is ready to accept defeat and congratulate the winner if she can’t win this year’s tripartite elections.
She told reporters after casting her vote in her home village Zomba.
“I am confident that I will because I have made great strides during my tenure but the power to vote for me lies in the hands of the Malawian voters,” President Joyce Banda said.
Banda faces 11 other contenders on Presidential race in which has been billed a highly contested election.
But the hot contenders are Malawi Congress Party (MCP)’s Dr Lazarus Chakwera, Atupele Muluzi for United Democratic Front and Democratic Progressive Party’s Professor Arthur Mutharika.
Meanwhile, protests have erupted in some of the polling centers due to delay of voting materials.
In other centers, Malawi Electroal Commission made a mistake by bringing ballot papers of 2009 instead of 2014.
MEC Chairperson Justice Maxon Mbendela is to address the media fraternity on reported disturbances over problems experienced by voters.
Meanwhile, elections have been postponed for Councillors in Mbalachanda Mzimba due to stray ballot papers.
According one of the MEC officials in the district, ballot papers meant for Mbalachanda in Mzimba have been found in Mchesi in Lilongwe while Mbalachanda is having ballot papers from Ntcheu.
The development has forced MEC to postpone the elections to a later date.
Banda took over the reign of power after the demise of president Bingu wa Mutharika two years ago.
About 7 million people have registered to vote – roughly half the country’s total population.
Thi is the good of marawi mucilim?
Thi the my joyci banda is the more of pharilameti?
I think that Prof Mutharika might win these elections, it is better for Malawi than Mrs Joyce Banda who should stay home and cook for her ailing husband. These elections will however, expose the dangers of religious organizations taking sides, as we shall soon see if the incumbent looses. As religious leaders, we must be strategic in our thinking and stop aligning people with certain political leaders of our own likes expecting to be rewarded once they ascend to power, be warned!
