Muslim artists in Blantyre on Sunday July 14, 2014 went to polls to elect new office bearers for their association.
In his acceptance speech, the newly elected chairman of the Blantyre Muslims Artists Association (BMAA) Alabi โmtunduwathaโ Kachale has promised to woo other artists to form committees in their respective districts so that the association becomes grows to national level.
โMy first task will be to make sure that much as we have identified the talent here in Blantyre, the same should happen in other cities and districts in Malawi. The association would like to see artists from Mangochi, Zomba, Lilongwe and even Mzuzu exposedโ stated Kachale.
He further expressed worry on piracy as the major obstacle for all artists in the country and Muslim artists are not spared.
โIt is very pathetic for people like Ismail Katawala, Anganga Afiki, Anganga Ajabilu, Muhammad Chirimba, who have taken individual efforts to come up with DVDs and CDs languishing in poverty because of piracy. As a new committee, we are going to brainstorm on what best we can do to assist our members to end this iniquity that is killing our artists,โ he said.
He therefore asked every artist to join the association once it opens its branches in their respective areas.
BMAA held its second elections to elect new position bearers after the first tenure of office had expired. The association, which has three departments, drama, nasheeds and poetry was formed in 2010 and has seen its membership grow since then.
ย Other people who have made it into the executive committee are Shakira Kachule as the vice chair, Fatima Rajab as the secretary general and her deputy is Muhammad Chirimba. Yusuf Bamusi is the treasure general and Salim Kumpita is the publicity secretary while Shayb Mustaph is the deputy.
