In Islam, volunteering, is the offer of time, energy, efforts, skills, and knowledge for the sake of our Lord Almighty. Volunteering is thus the fundamental act of citizenry and special expression of ones belief –writes Hashim Msusa.

We vote once every five years in an election. The last time Malawi went into polls was May, 2014. When we engage in volunteer work, we vote every moment, about the kind of development we envisage, making volunteering a tool to create a difference.

As we live in our communities, there is always someone who needs our help. There are schools, markets, district hospitals in bad shape. Generally, whenever we turn, we find something which needs our attention.

Volunteering, is a package of citizen’s show of cooperation, love and solidarity. Allah Almighty speaks in the Noble Qur’an, “And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.” (5:2) As a nation, we should realise the need to inculcate the culture of volunteering in our communities.

In Islam, volunteering, is the offer of time, energy, efforts, skills, and knowledge for the sake of our Lord Almighty. Volunteering is thus the fundamental act of citizenry and special expression of ones belief. We have skills, energy, time and the knowhow. What is to take part in volunteer work, for the good of our nation.

Progressively, the concept of volunteering, should occupy the fabric of our nations’ way of life. As citizens, it is only good to open a file of volunteering within our desired time space. The volume of initiatives that ought to be taken is so audacious. Due to lack of volunteering, social services in many communities, are at standstill.

Interestingly, we belong to a certain community. Let’s volunteer to polish up the rough spot’s in our communities, making it pleasant and desired for living. It is believed that success in life is not what you gain. It is about what you do for others. Therefore, do something for our communities and bring a difference.

Many communities and societies in the world achieved development through volunteer work. When we volunteer, we rekindle lost hope. This can be done without worldly gain. Allah Almighty says in the Noble Qur’an, “And they give food out of love for Him to the poor and the orphan and captives: We only feed you for Allah’s sake; we desire from you neither reward nor thanks.” (76:8-9)

Give Malawi a new reflection of compassion, unselfish caring, through volunteer service. Imagine, the collective impact, we would have in creating better communities, if all volunteered a little but often. Enable communities get transformed, by cherishing volunteering, making it the lifeblood of Malawi.
