Government has assured Malawians of peace and order as the country awaits the Constitutional Court to pass its verdict on the high profile presidential elections case.
Minister of Information, Civic Education and Communications Technology Mark Botomani, says security agencies are ready to protect Malawians during the time.
“As the country awaits the presidential election case ruling in the Constitutional Court, Government would like to assure the public that there is going to be peace and calm, law and order before, during and after the judgment,”
“Government is aware that this ruling will attract different reactions. As such, State Security Organs are well prepared to keep the peace that the country has safeguarded and enjoyed for many years,” he says.
Botomani urges all political parties in the country and other stakeholders to respect the rule of law and the Judiciary, which is an independent arm of Government.
“Sobriety and patriotism are key ingredients to peace during this period. We only have one Malawi and destruction of the country is counterproductive,” he says.
Botomani says Malawians should refrain from posting fake stories on social media that can cause tension in the country.
“Government calls on the public to desist from posting fake news on social media which creates tension about the impending ruling,”
“Malawi is a peaceful and God fearing country which does not condone violence.
Let us remain united and be agents of peace,” he says.
Presidential candidates of Malawi Congress Party and UTM Party went to the court seeking for nullification of 21st May, 2019 presidential elections in which Democratic Progressive Party candidate, President Peter Mutharika was declared a winner.
The petitioners said that the elections had massive irregularities that favoured Mutharika.
The Constitutional Court is expected to pass its judgement soon.
