Mchinji District Council has set up a District Public Health Emergency Committee (PHEC) to check the spread of Coronavirus pandemic.
The committee vows to reach out to all the Traditional Authorities , the law enforcement agencies , faith based organizations, business communities and all community action groups to prevent the spread of the virus in the district.
Speaking in an interview with Malawi Muslim Website , Mchinji District Health Office (DHO) spokesperson, Owen Chataika, the committee is a response to COVID-19 pandemic working to intensify community sensitization on the need to take precautionary measures such as washing hands with soap, avoid body contacts and hand shaking to prevent the spread of the pandemic and lobby for more resources.
“The committee will ensure that the message of COVID-19 gets to the grassroots so that they are able to report to relevant authorities any Coronavirus suspect in the communities,” said Chataika.
Chataika said so far, the office of the DHO has put 17 people on quarantine urging government to provide all health woekers with Personal Protective equipments (PPEs).
He, then appealed for collaboration on the fight against the pandemic saying the fight against Coronavirus does not rest in the hands of health workers alone and the Ministry of Health.
