President Peter Mutharika says the 23rd June, 2020 fresh presidential polls were marred by massive irregularities.
Mutharika made the remarks today during the press briefing held at Kamuzu palace in Lilongwe.
According to Mutharika, DPP-UDF Alliance monitors were barred from exercising their mandate in central and northern region of the country.
Among others, Mutharika has cited the alleged assault of DPP’S Secretary General Glezelder Jeffrey , the missing of 15 DPP monitors and many other cases of violence against his party but Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) dismissed the complaints.
The president says elections cannot be credible and fair if other stakeholders are not allowed to take part in the whole electoral process.
However, Mutharika says he is waiting for the official results from MEC and he has asked Malawians to maintain peace after announcement of the results.
Meanwhile, Member of Parliament (MP) for Kampala Central Division Constituency in Uganda Muhammad Nsereko has congratulated President Elect, Dr Lazarus Chakwera.
According to unofficial results, Dr Chakwera has been elected as Malawi’s Sixth State President during fresh presidential polls held on 23rd June, 2020.
Nsereko who is also a lawyer says Dr Chakwera is a great man who will lead the country diligently.
“Congratulations to my friend Dr. Lazarus Chakwera the President Elect of Malawi and leader of the Malawi Congress Party. Please maintain our stance against foreign exploitation of Africa.
You’re a humble unifier and an intellectual,” he says.
Unofficial results are indicating that Dr Chakwera has scooped 2.6 million votes (59.4 percent) while Incumbent President Professor Peter Mutharika has scooped 1.7 million votes (39.9 percent)
