Vice President Dr Saulos Klaus Chilima continues to engage the private sector in his capacity as Minister Responsible for Economic Planning and Development and Public Sector Reforms to develop the country.
Yesterday, Dr Chilima met the private business players in Commercial City of Blantyre.
“First, I had an engagement with the Private Sector in the morning, soliciting views and discussing with them their role in building a new Malawi under the leadership of His Excellency Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, President of the Republic,”
“As the engine of economic growth, the Private Sector has a huge role to play in national development through job creation, provision of critical goods and services and paying taxes that finance investment and government operations,” Chilima said.
According to the Vice President ,the discussion was candid and open.
“The Captains of Industry brought to the table issues that they want improved in the Public Sector in order to ignite passion from the industry . We will be taking on board some of the suggestions to ensure that both the Public Sector and the Private Sector pull in one direction,” he said.
Chilima has also appreciated the standization process at the Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS)
“Later in the afternoon, I visited Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) offices to appreciate the progress on the Standardization Quality Assurance and Metrology (SQAM) project that we started way back in 2017,”
“Much as the project has stalled , I have been assured that in the next 10 months, construction of the One Stop Centre that among others will see Malawi’s products being accepted on the international market without retesting will have been completed. Our export products will also be tested locally once construction is completed,” he said.
Chilima said the development will help government save on resources spent on getting our products and goods tested elsewhere.
“Overall, there have been positive indications from both the Public Sector and the Private Sector that we can work together to change the work ethic, rigidity and retrogressive laws so that we can move forward as a country to benefit the people of Malawi,” Chilima said.
