Symon Vuwa Kaunda of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has retained his Nkhatabay Central Constituency parliamentary seat in court ordered elections held Tuesday, 29th June, 2021.
Unofficial results show that Symon Vuwa Kaunda has retained the seat with 5439 votes, against 5223 votes for his main rival, Raphael Joseph Mhone of the Peoples Party (PP ) that is part of the ruling Tonse Alliance Government.
Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition (LOP) in Parliament Kondwani Nankhumwa has congratulated Vuwa for the victory.
“I wish to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Honourable Vuwa Kaunda for winning the Nkhata Bay Central parliamentary by-election, which took place on Tuesday, June 29, 2021.
What is more exciting for me is that our Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) parliamentary candidate reclaimed his seat against a combination of nine (9) political parties,” Nankhumwa says.
LOP congratulates the people of Nkhata Bay Central for courageously exercising their democratic right to elect a representative of their choice without being intimidated by any outside influences.
“Now that the people of Nkhata Bay Central have spoken, boldly, it is my humble appeal to Honourable Vuwa Kaunda to reciprocate this gesture by serving his constituents, the Democratic Progressive Party, and the entire nation with integrity, selfless dedication and patriotism. I cannot wait to continue working with Honourable Vuwa Kaunda inside and outside Parliament,” Nankhumwa says.
In April, 2021, The Supreme Court of Appeal in Blantyre quashed the results of Nkhata Bay Central Constituency May 2019, Parliamentary elections.
Raphael Mhone, a People’s Party candidate in that poll, challenged the victory of Democratic Progressive Party candidate, Symon Vuwa Kaunda as declared by the Malawi Electoral Commission. The Court nullified the results citing irregularities in the poll.
