The Senior Resident Magistrate (SRM) Court in Lilongwe has slapped a 23-year-old man, Anthony Kachimanga, with 14 years jail term for defiling a 14-year-old girl.
The court heard through state prosecutor, Sergeant Maggie Kayaka of Kawale Police that Kachimanga was in a love affair with the young girl since early 2020, and on August 11, 2020, he took the girl to a local rest house within Area 24 where he spent some days while having carnal knowledge with the girl. This was discovered later after some follow-ups by the girl’s mother.
Appearing in court, Kachimanga pleaded not guilty to the charge which prompted the state to parade four witnesses who proved the case beyond a reasonable doubt.
In her submission, prosecutor Kayaka asked the court to impose a stiffer punishment, citing that such cases are on the rise in the area.
In mitigation, the convict prayed for leniency, stating that he was deceived by the girl’s appearance.
Passing the sentence, SRM Florence Msekandiana concurred with the state and ordered the convict to serve a 14-year jail term.
Kachimanga hails from Phikani Village, Traditional Authority Champiti in Ntcheu district.
