Over the past few days rumors had it that the filling station owners are holding their fuel so that they can sell them at higher price when Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority MERA will increase the fuel price in the country, a scenerio that caused panic to Malawians as fuel has become scarce in most pump stations.
Following the news, the minister on Tuesday joined officials from both National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA) and Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) to inspect filling stations to establish the truth of the matter.
When the team comprising of the Minister and officials from the two companies inspected some filling stations in the capital Lilongwe, it was discovered that indeed the filling stations are running out of the fuel and not what is speculating in the social media.
“I would like to assure Malawians that everything is under control. At the moment we have enough fuel in the country therefore people should not panic.
“The filling stations I have visited here in Lilongwe have proven to us that they are not holding the fuel but they have run out of the commodity and are just waiting for the consignment. We have all seen the crossroads filling station where a tanker is offloading both petrol and diesel, an indication that they are ready to sell the commodity.” said the minister.
The team visited different filling stations in the country including, Total Independence Drive, Petroda Area 15 and Puma Crossroads.
Currently there’s a fuel crisis worldwide that has been triggered by the Russia’s Ukraine invasion.
