After several high level meetings between the officials from Malawi and Mozambique, the two neighbouring countries are ready to implement energy deals aimed at ending energy challenges and boost social economic growth in the two countries.

Two days ago, Minister of Energy Honorable Ibrahim Matola said Malawi government is exploring several ways of ending energy challenges in the country.

Matola made the remarks when he visited Zoa Falls at Thekelani in Chipangula Village, Thekerani, Thyolo district where a hydro electricity generating power plant is set to be constructed in collaboration with the government of Mozambique.

“This is a God given treasure here at Zoa Falls in the river of Ruo. The Governments of Malawi and Mozambique want to join hands and share power that is expected to be produced here. The 50 megawatts expected to be produced here will help our people,” Matola said .

The Minister said the project is one of the promises that President Dr Lazarus Chakwera promised Malawians.

“This is one of the project that Malawi Government under the leadership of president Dr Lazarus Chakwera promised Malawians. The president promised Malawians of partnering with Mozambique in power generation by December, 2023,” he said.

In his remarks, Member of Parliament of Thyolo South Sandram Scott hailed Government of the development.

“This is a sign that Minister of Energy is working diligently to end energy woes in the country. Despite all your busy schedules, you have come here to appreciate that we can generate electricity from this falls. I need to thank you for coming here,” the MP said.

MP Scott said Zoa Falls has a capability of propelling the country’s social economic development once the power plant is constructed.

Malawi Government through the Ministry of Energy is committed to end electricity challenges facing the country. The government is working hand in hand with the neighbouring countries such as Mozambique to make sure that blackouts are history.

In the past years, Malawi president,Dr Lazarus Chakwera and his Mozambican counterpart Filipe Jacinto Nyusi have had several meetings on how to solve energy challenges in the two neighbouring countries.

Last year from 22nd to 24th November, 2021 two technical teams from both sides (Malawi and Mozambique) convened a meeting at Sunbird Soche in Blantyre and a field visit to Zoa Falls project from 6th to 7th December 2021 to discuss issues concerning the proposed development of the Berua mini hydropower plant and Zoa Falls Project hydro power plant on Ruo River under a framework of bilateral cooperation.

Recently, the Electricity Supply Corperation of Malawi (ESCOM) in collaboration with Ministry of Energy launched the Malawi Electricity Access Project (MEAP) that is expected to increase accessibility of electricity in the country.
