The Minister of Energy, Ibrahim Matola says Malawi government under the leadership of president Dr. Lazarus Chakwera is committed to establish and sustain strong and independent statutory corporations staff unions in the country.
Matola made the remarks yesterday when he officially opened the 5th Quadrennial Congress of the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Staff Union (ESU) at Mponela in Dowa district.
“My presence at the function demonstrates the government’s and President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera’s commitment to having strong and independent Unions in the country, of which ESU is one,” he said.
Matola took the opportunity to thank the outgoing leadership of ESU for their strong and unbiased representation of the union in all interactions with his ministry and all other national fora.
“Together, the Ministry and the outgoing ESU Leadership have accomplished a lot. We worked with the Leadership to achieve the harmonization of Conditions of Service in our sector,” he added.
The Energy Minister said his ministry worked with ESU leadership to reach amicable resolutions to annual salary increment in 2022 among many success stories that they registered. Several statutory corporations have staff unions that work collaboratively with ministries to discharge their duties diligently.
