Muslims in Malawi through their mother bodies, Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) and Qadria Muslim Association of Malawi (QMAM) say legalizing same sex marriages in the country is against the teachings of Islam.
In a joint statement signed by Secretary Generals of MAM, Alhaj Dr. Twaibu Lawe and QMAM, Osman Karim, dated 17th May, 2023 , Muslims say legalizing same sex marriages /marriages will directly infringe on their religious liberties.
“Once legalized, Imaams will be forced to conduct Nikah on same sex couples in our Masjids even against our own Islamic convictions ; as is currently the case where such laws have changed, ” reads a statement .
Muslims say legalizing same sex marriages would promote the moral decay in society as children and young people in schools and colleges, including Islamic schools , will openly be taught homosexuality as being normal which is an unacceptable behaviour.
A statement adds : ” Homosexuality indirectly threatens the natural family unit which is the hub or core for a strong society. Other definitions of marriages /unions besides male and female is a fallacy and a perversion of natural order. ”
According to a statement, Allah hates homosexuality as He (Allah) has stipulated in the Holy Qur’an 26 Verses 165-166.
Muslims request the judiciary not to change this fundamental law without consulting Malawians.
Malawi Muslims ask leaders in the country not to not succumb to pressure and that the international community should respect the sovereignty of Malawi and not dictate the values which are conflicting with her religious and cultural values.
The Constitutional Court of the High Court will be sitting on 5th June, 2023 in Blantyre to determine where the organization’s promoting same sex relationships should be legalized in Malawi. If the court passes the decision that the Government can start registering such organizations, it will mean legalizing same sex marriages/relationships in the country.
