The Minister of Water and Sanitation, Abida Sidik Mia who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Chikwawa N’kombezi has commissioned solar-powered water supply in Chikwawa and Chiradzulu districts.
According to Mia, these water supply facilities will provide the said schools and surrounding communities with much needed access to potable water. To ensure sustainability, the structures will be be managed by community-led committees and local chiefs.
“I presided over the commissioning of solar-powered water supply systems at Tomali Primary School in Chikwawa district , and at Chikuli Primary School in Chiradzulu district the following day. During the commissioning, Ulemu Chiuzi, Country Director for Water for People, announced their organization’s plans to build 21 further water supply schemes and expand the project to include two more districts by the end of this year,” Mia wrote on her official Facebook page.
The Minister applauded the Water for People organization for its outstanding work.
“I pointed out that such an initiative is consistent with the Government’s goal of enhancing rural water delivery systems by establishing piped water systems powered by solar energy, rather than manually operated boreholes,” she said.
Mia added :”Despite Cyclone Freddy’s devastation, which severely harmed the WASH sector, I reaffirmed President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera commitment through our Ministry, to achieve Sustainable Development Goal Number 6 (SGD6), which is to provide adequate water and sanitation to all Malawians by 2030.”
According to the Minister, these initiatives and commitments demonstrate the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders and organizations in effectively addressing water and sanitation challenges in Malawi, paving the way for a brighter and healthier future for all.
