Malawi President, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera says the fight against corruption remains a core of the government under his administration.
Yesterday, the president met the Minister of Justice , Titus Mvalo, the Secretary to the President, Colleen Zamba, the Attorney General, Thabo Chakala Nyirenda, the Director of Public Prosecutions, Masauko Chamkakala and Director General of the Anti-Corruption Bureau, Martha Chizuma at Kamuzu Palace in Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe.
Chakwera says the cordial engagement among these critical institutions further cements his resolve to deal with corruption with a seamless approach that bears fruits.
“I have prompted the institutional heads to collaboratively undertake their noble duty guided only by the sovereign administrative and legal statutes above anything else,” the President says.
Recently, the United States Embassy in Malawi condemned the Malawi Government under President Chakwera for waging a war against Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) director general Martha Chizuma.
In a statement issued , the embassy said the actions of the government had severely undermined the credibility of the Chakwera administration’s fight against corruption.
In December 2022, Chizuma was arrested over her leaked audio and early February, 2023 Secretary to the President and Cabinet Colleen Zamba suspended Chizuma due to the allegations relating to the audio.
The same week, Malawi Law Society (MLS) obtained an injunction against the interdiction of Chizuma as well as the arrest and continued prosecution. Later, the new Director of Public Prosecutions, Masauko Chamkakala unconditionally withdrew all the charges against Chizuma.
