The opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has been elected the sixth president of the Republic of Malawi during fresh presidential elections held on 23rd June, 2020.
Chakwera, who prospered under Tonse Alliance, will have UTM leader Dr Saulos Chilima as his Vice President.
The new leaders of the country will be sworn in today at Malawi Square in Lilongwe.
Announcing the results last night, Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Justice Dr Chifundo Kachale said Chakwera managed 58.5 % of the total votes.
Below are the facts:
Chakwera got 2,604,043 votes.
Mutharika managed 1,751,877.
Peter Kuwani got 32,456.
6,859,570 Malawians registered.
Some 4,445,699 voters turned up to cast their ballots, representing 64 percent.
There were 57,323 null and void votes.
Valid votes counted were 4,388,376.
