Malawi President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has encouraged poor countries to stay determined and focused.
Chakwera made the remarks today at the opening ceremony of the 5th United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC 5) underway in Doha, Qatar.
Addressing the conference, Chakwera urged poor nations to stay determined and focused in pursuing responsive and responsible human development.
“Despite the odds being against us within the global financial and economic systems, the deliberate strategic efforts encapsulated in the Doha Programme of Action (2022-2031) are pragmatic and will facilitate the realisation of sustainable development for our respective populations,” Chakwera says.
The Malawi leader says he is also encouraged by the assurance offered by the United Nations, through Secretary General António Guterres, who in his remarks advocated for reformed global systems to make them inclusive and accommodative to everyone’s interests.
“As Malawi hands over the mantle of LDC chairmanship, we remain resolute to support in full the implementation of the Doha Programme of Action,” he says.
Chakwera adds,” Our expectation is that every Malawian should benefit from the outcomes of this programme between now and 2031. ”
The 5th United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries is being held under the theme “From Potential to Prosperity.”
