Reports that are circulating in the media that there are misunderstandings in the main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) is not good news for the country’s democracy as this may weaken the opposition.
This follows rumors that MCP’s Director for campaign Felix Jumbe has joined the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) claims which Jumbe himself has denied while admitting that indeed there are misunderstandings among top officials of the party.
This is not good news for the opposition considering the fact that MCP is the only party that has high numbers of legislators after the ruling DPP which is also in a coalition with the United Democratic Front (UDF).
The country’s need a strong opposition to speak for the masses in the village and ask government in parliament to explain how certain issues of national concern like the budget was used.
People do not want to come back to a situation as it has been in the past when the opposition was like mere spectators in parliament because they were in minority a thing that made the Civil Society Organizations (CSO’s) to take the role of the opposition.
This does not mean that having a government with majority numbers of legislators in the National Assembly is bad provided if they put the interest of people who voted them into power at heart.
Past experience has shown that the government which we had had before with majority numbers of legislators in parliament were putting their own interest first than for those who put then in power.
The good example is what was recently reported in the media that the ruling DPP and UDF were planning to impeach the Speaker Richard Msowoya on grounds that is was bias towards them when handling some important matters of national concern.
Meanwhile MCP’s spokesperson Dr Jessie Kabwila Kapasula has admitted that indeed there are some misunderstandings among some top officials of the party with the party’s leader Dr Lazarus Chakwera but she said there are not serious to the extent that can pose any danger of diving the party.
