The Mangochi First Grade Magistrate Court has convicted and sentenced a 46-year-old man, ldi Abudu, to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour for stabbing his 22-year-old niece with a spear.
Mangochi police station public relations officer Inspector Amina Tepani Daudi said during court proceedings, state prosecutor Sub Inspector Ted Namaona told the court that the convict was among the recent pardoned inmates from prison while serving a 4- year- jail term for wounding his own father.
“On April 21, 2023 (during Ramadan) the convict was given K1,000.00 by the victim after she received some money from their relatives in South Africa meant for Eid celebration,” Namaona said.
State prosecutor Sub Inspector Namaona added that the same day in the afternoon, the victim and other relatives were surprised to see him with one sided hair cut and everyone mocked him about it a thing which angered the convict.
“Few hours later, while the family was breaking the fasting, the convict emerged from nowhere with the spear and stabbed the victim twice on the chest and right rib who collapsed instantly and was later rushed to Mangochi District Hospital where she was admitted for a week ,” he said.
Appearing before court, Abuduh who pleaded guilty shocked the court when he said he had nothing to say after he was given a chance to mitigate.
In his submission, state prosecutor Sub Inspector Namaona reminded the court that, Abuduh’s behaviour of resistance to change is pathetic and cannot be tolerated in the society hence prayed for a custodial sentence.
Passing sentence First Grade Magistrate Roy Kakutu concurred with the state hence sentenced him to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour to deter would be offenders.
Abuduh hails from Bwanali Village in Traditional Authority Chowe in Mangochi District.
