The Mangochi Second Grade Magistrate’s Court on March 6, 2023 convicted and sentenced Kimu Davie, 50, to 7-years imprisonment with hard labour for stealing several items in the district.
During court proceedings, Mangochi Police Station Prosecution Officer lnspector Amos Mwase told the court that, the convict on February 19, 2023 broke into the house of Ellen Naura, a matron at St. John Girls Primary School when the owner went for morning prayers.
“When she returned home, the victim discovered that her house had been broken into through the back door and the criminals went away with assorted items including K186,000 cash, Lenovo laptop, 32 inch Ecco plasma TV, radio and assorted groceries,” prosecutor Mwase said.
The prosecutor added that, the matter was reported at Chimwala Police Unit where investigations were instituted which led to the arrest of Davie on February 22, 2023.
He also led the officers to his house where some of the stolen items were recovered.
Davie who pleaded guilty to the charges asked for court’s leniency stating that he has family obligations.
In his submission prosecutor Mwase asked the court for a custodial sentence while justifying that his behaviour is a threat and cannot be tolerated in the society.
Passing sentence Second Grade Magistrate Baxter Chikalimba concurred with the state.
He therefore sentenced him to 7-years for house breaking and 27 months imprisonment with hard labour for theft. The sentences to run concurrently.
Davie hails from Chilunda Village, Traditional Authority Chimwala in Mangochi.
