Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) renews calls for the resignation of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson, Dr Jane Ansah and other Commissioners saying they are incompetent to manage 2nd July, 2020 fresh presidential polls.
Speaking on Monday at a press briefing in Lilongwe, HRDC Chairperson Gift Trapence said the current MEC leaders were found incompetent by both the High Court sitting as the Constitutional Court and Supreme Court of Appeal where Dr Ansah is also a Justice.
“We are renewing our call for Dr. Jane Ansah to step down as Chairperson for Malawi Electoral commission”.
“Dr. Jane Ansah said it herself that if the courts find that she and her commissioners mismanaged the 21 May, 2019 elections, she will leave the commission,” said Trapence.
Trapance said both the High Court sitting as Constitutional Court and Supreme Court of Appeal, the highest court in the country have found that her (Jane Ansah) and other commissioners are ineligible to conduct elections in thw country.
“The Supreme Court determined that the current members at MEC are incompetent,”
“If we can not have her leave the stage after all this, we shall be taking to the streets again to demonstrate to demand her resignation and other fellow commissioners,” he said.
Trapence added to say,” we urge the National Elections Consultative Forum( NECOF) not to allow that Dr. Ansah to be presiding over Meetings.”
The country will hold fresh presidential polls on 2nd July, 2020.
