Member of Malawi Congress Party who is also a renowned Muslim Businessman has denied allegations that he has denounced his religion and joined Malawi Assemblies Of God Church to score political mileage.
On Sunday, Mia attended Christian prayers at Malawi Assemblies Of God Church in Nkolokoti, Machinjiri where the pastor at the church offered to pray for him and he agreed.
This stirred a debate on the social media with some alleging that the former Cabinet Minister has now become a born again Christian.
In his reaction, Mia trashed the allegations saying it’s the work of misguided people whose job is to create storm out of teaspoon.
“I attended a fundraiser at Machinjiri’s Malawi Assemblies of God church in Blantyre yesterday. By doing so, it doesn’t mean that I have joined Christianity as some misguided people on the social media are saying. I didn’t eat Mgonero (Passover) as some people are trying hard to make you believe. I didn’t denounce my religion,” he said.
Mia further said that there are so many Muslim leaders in Malawi who have attended such similar functions but they are still Muslims.
He added: “Former Head of State Bakili Muluzi was attending similar functions, he could even read Bible Scriptures. Pastors would even pray for him. Did it make him a Christian? Is he a Christian now? Did anyone ever raise any eyebrow? And when the same thing happens to Sidik Mia, then he has joined Christianity; then he was eating ‘Mgonero’ and all sorts of stuff?”
He also said there is nothing wrong for him to accept a prayer offer from the church pastor.
Said Mia: “The Pastor at Machinjiri church said we should pray for you and you expected me to say, “No Pastor, don’t pray for me because I am Muslim?” C’mon good people! Let’s stop creating a mountain out of a molehill. I am a devout Muslim and so I shall remain.“
At the function, Mia donated MK1 million to the church for buying church instruments. He also donated MK100, 000 to Thoko Katimba who was the guest artist.
