Former President, Madame Dr. Joyce Banda, has alleged that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) led Government of President Professor Peter Mutharika is hiding figures on the Coronavirus saying the international community cannot assist Malawi when the country is hiding statistics to fight the pandemic.
The allegation is following government’s declaration of a State of Disaster when the country has not registered any case of Coronavirus and no consultation with the opposition leaders and stakeholders on what Malawi as a nation together can do to prevent the spread of the pandemic by putting their political differences aside .
The declaration by President Mutharika shocked many with others thinking that it was done out of politics after tens of thousands peace loving Malawians witnessed the grand signing MCP and UTM alliance in Lilongwe.
In his declaration speech, President Mutharika banned a gathering of more than 100 people coinciding with the MCP and UTM alliance set to hold a grand alliance for victory rally in Mangochi after the Lilongwe launch.
Speaking through her Facebook page, former President madame Dr. Joyce Banda, asked the DPP led government not to politicize the Coronavirus pandemic saying other countries citing Kenya, are providing daily updates on Coronavirus in their respective countries.
Dr. Joyce Banda said the nation has to know on what is happening on Coronavirus giving an example of Kenyan minister of Health, who brief the nation on daily basis for updates.
She said she is saddened to see that Malawi is missing from the list of countries to benefit from US$100 million which will be provided to risk countries devastated by Coronavirus as part of humanitarian needs.
“Tanzania, Mozambique and Zambia, countries bordering Malawi, have all recorded Coronavirus cases, while Malawi, still having no registered case”, reads JB fb post in part.
The Government of Malawi has imposed a ban on cross border travels and international flights effective Wednesday this Week beside banning a gathering of more than100 people and is encouraging communities to practice precautionary sanitation measures of washing hands with soap and avoiding body contact and hand shaking.
Meanwhile, Government spokesperson, Hon. Mark Botomani MP says government has opened a special government account at FDH, Capital hill branch for Coronavirus donations.
And in an international Coronavirus related news, President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, has ordered for a door to door, village to village, town to town distribution of free food to his people as the country is under LOCKDOWN.
