LILONGWE – Joyce Hilda Banda has been sworn in as Acting President for Malawi following the sudden death of Professor Bingu wa Mutharika who passed away on Thursday April 5, 2012 at Kamuzu Central Hospital after suffering from a cadiac arrest.
The swearing in ceremony was held at Parliament Building in Lilongwe on Saturday April 7, 2012 and was administered by the Chief Justice Lovemore Munlo. It was witnessed by foreign head of missions, Members of Parliament, Cabinet Ministers and People’s Party supporters amongst others.
Joyce Banda who remained the Vice President despite being kicked out of from Mutharika’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party will become the first female President in the history of Malawi and Malawians are anxious to see how she will tackle the prevailing economic problems that her predecessor has left behind.
She becomes the second female President in Africa after Liberia’s Ellen Johnson Sirleaf who was reelected recently.
