Former President of the Republic of Malawi Dr Bakili Muluzi (a Muslim) on Saturday asked Malawians in the country to thank Allah for getting rid of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government which he said was oppressing and causing much pain to its citizens for no apparent reasons.
Muluzi said Malawians suffered a lot during late President Bingu wa Mutharika’s administration – eroding the democracy which him and his colleagues fought for in 1993.
He was speaking at this year’s Iftaar program organised by Islamic Concern which was held at Iqra Propagation Centre in Blantyre.
“Sometimes we need to learn to give a credit where it is due. Unlike in the past regime, things have now changed – no fuel queues, no more forex shortages and the relationship with our neighbours has improved. This is what we need thank Allah for because Malawians suffered a lot in the past regime.
“Allah was very kind to us for flying that regime on a speedy Concord,” he said in referrence to the fall of the DPP regime following the sudden death of Bingu wa Mutharika on April 5 this year.
Commenting on his health, Muluzi said that he is now feeling better and thanked all Malawians (Muslims and non-Muslims) for their prayers.
He however, blamed his ailment on the “hostile” political environment during the previous Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) regime.
This year’s iftaar program was held under the theme ‘Active Participation in National Development.‘
