MAM Spokesperson Sheikh Dinala Chabulika told Malawi Muslims Official Website on Tuesday that the association was established to serve Malawi Muslims not to support any political party.

“To effectively achieve this, we work with government of the day because you cannot do any meaningful development without government. After all, it is not only MAM does this, many religious organisations too. We have worked with any government that has been ushered into since late Kamuzu Banda’s regime,” he said.

Sheikh Chabulika also said MAM never facilitated any dubious activity during the DPP Government such as clearing imported goods on behalf of Asians conducting businesses in the country and urged Malawians to ignore “the social media propaganda by people who are power hungry and doesn’t wish MAM well.”

“Government abolished tax free importation of goods by Non- Governmental Organisations (NGOs) long time ago. So how can you say MAM brought in goods for free by virtue of being an NGO? People should know that MAM pays tax when importing its goods into the country including Dates so the allegations leveled against it are fake.”

On money laundering, the spokesperson said MAM’s Money for projects is deposited into the already registered MAM Bank Accounts and it is wrong to allege that MAM was involved in money laundering during the DPP regime,” Chabulika says.
