Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) has dismissed claims by a certain group of some Muslim professionals who are demanding the change of current MAM constitution to give chance to anyone to compete for the position of chairman.
Dr Salmin Omar Idruss who is the Secretary General for MAM said those who are calling for the change of MAM constitution they could have approached them to discuss on the matter if they are really professionals.
He said what they are advocating for cannot happen because every institution or organization has got its rules that guide it.
“Every job has got people who are specialized in that field and it is the constitution of MAM which states its chair must be a sheikh because he understands Islamic principles better, not just everyone for the sake of being a Muslim. You cannot take mechanic to work as a doctor likewise engineer to work as a lawyer,” he said.
MAM SG said except for the position of chairman, all positions at MAM are occupied by Muslims who are professionals in various fields so for them to claim that they are not contributing to MAM it is not true.
The SG also acknowledged that MAM constitution has been changed but he said this is not in line with those who were advocating for the change because this started long time ago.
“The constitution is currently being looked at by the executive then it will be sent to our trustees, finally people will see it to give their input where we need to change before it goes for registration,”
A certain group of some Muslim professionals were advocating for the change of MAM constitution to give chance to anyone to contest for the position of sheikh.
Currently only sheikhs are allowed to contest for the position of MAM chair.
