To continue serving Malawi Muslims diligently, the Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) has deregistered as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) and now it is a legally recognized Faith Based Organization (FBO).
Speaking in an interview with Muslim Media Agency (MMA), the Publicity Secretary for MAM Sheikh Dinala Chabulika says the development is expected to help the organization effectively serve Muslims and the country at large.
“It is true that MAM is no longer a Non-Governmental Organization but a Faith Based Organization just like many other organizations affiliated to religious bodies. This means we are now bigger than an NGO that gives us a bigger platform to serve Ummah and the country diligently and effectively, ” Chabulika says.
According to Sheikh Chabulika, MAM has been an NGO but now time has come for the Muslim’s mother body to be a complete faith based organization.
“MAM is supposed to be a faith based organization and that is what we have done now. We are fully recognised by the laws of Malawi as a faith based organization,” MAM Publicity Secretary says.
Sheikh Chabulika says under MAM, there are some groupings registered as NGOs but MAM as a mother body, is a faith based organization.
A statement issued by Non-Governmental Organization Regulatory Authority (NGORA) dated 15th March, 2023 indicates that MAM applied to be deregistered as an NGO and become a faith based FBO on 22nd June, 2022.
According to the World Bank, Faith-Based Organizations (FBOs) are entities dedicated to specific religious identities, often including a social or moral component. The Bank recognizes their distinct strategic value given their unique attributes, including the fact that more than 80% of the world’s population claims religious affiliation.
FBOs are found in every country and offer opportunites for partnership and advocacy on a broad range of key development issues.
