Muslims’ mother body Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) chairperson Sheikh Idrissa Muhammad has extended his sincere condolences to the ‘Mutharika’s family, Her Excellence Joyce Banda and Malawi Government’ following the death President Bingu Wa Mutharika.

The MAM chair said this in an exclusive interview with Malawi Muslims Official Website on Saturday.

Sheikh Idrissa Muhammad said as a leader of Muslims in the country he is very saddened with the sudden death of ‘our’ beloved leader Bingu wa Mutharika.

He however said as a religious organisation, they are ready to work with the new government.

“Let me also take this opportunity to congratulate Her Excellency Joyce Banda for becoming a new President of Republic of Malawi. As MAM, I would like to state that we still maintain our stand that we will continue to work with the government of the day,” added the Malawi Muslims’ leader.

Joyce Hilda Banda has been sworn in as Acting President for Malawi following the sudden death of Professor Bingu wa Mutharika who passed away on Thursday April 5, 2012 at Kamuzu Central Hospital after suffering from a cardiac arrest.

The swearing in ceremony was held at Parliament Building in Lilongwe on Saturday April 7, 2012 and was administered by the Chief Justice Lovemore Munlo where foreign head of missions, Members of Parliament, Cabinet Ministers and People’s Party supporters amongst others were present.

Joyce Banda who remained the Vice President despite being expelled from Mutharika’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has become the first female President in the history of Malawi and SADC region but she becomes the second female President in Africa after Liberia’s Ellen Johnson Sirleaf who was re-elected recently.

However, Malawians are anxious to see how she will tackle the prevailing economic problems that her predecessor has left behind.

I agree with aishasambuka that we should move forward but my free piece of advice to MAM chair is; avoid statements like 'ife asilamu tikuti'. Please avoid dividing muslims in the name of politics like you almost did some months ago.

As muslims we want to live together regardless our differences in politics, sports and social life.
