Secretary General for MAM Alhajj Twaibu Lawe made these remarks when the organization donated some relief items to the people that have been affected by floods in the lower shire and Machinga district.

He said their relief program such as assisting the flood victims is ongoing and is in line with government efforts of assisting the needy.

“This followed a request by the Member of Parliament for Machinga North East who approached our Chairman Sheikh Idrissa Muhammad and upon hearing his request we thought it wise as MAM to help the people that have been affected by floods in Kapoloma, Chisale, Chiwalo and Nyambi.

“On February 25, 2017 we were at N’gabu in the lower shire district of Chikwawa where we donated 700 bags of maize at one place and 300 bags at another, with a total of 2000 beneficiaries. Now we are here at Nainunje School in Ntaja where we are donating 400 bags that will help 800 families,” he said.

Lawe said the cause of MAM is to help the poor and people who have been affected by floods regardless of their religion, saying the organisation has reliable donors who will continue supporting the programme. He observed that due to effects of climate change, hunger is a recurrent problem in Malawi, hence the continuation of the programme.

He said it is their obligation to reach places where government is failing and this is the agenda for MAM’s Chair Sheikh Idrissa Muhammad.

“Let me take this opportunity to ask other religious groups to do the same because our duty is to help government where it cannot reach,” he said.

Speaking at the same function, Sheikh Jazzim Ainati, Director for African Continent Committee for Islamic Revival Society from Kuwait said his organization will continue helping the people that have been affected by floods not only in Machinga but in different parts of the country through MAM.

He urged the victims to continue praying to Allah because it is Him (Allah) who has sent the donors through MAM to come to their rescue at their time of need. Ainati also called on all beneficiaries to always thank Allah so that He continues to bless people who are helping those in need.

Also speaking at the same function, group Village Headman Kapoloma of Machinga expressed gratitude to Muslim Association of Malawi, Member of Parliament for the area Atupele Muluzi, Non-Government Organizations and government for coming in time to help when they heard that they were hit by flash floods.

“I thank MAM and their donors from Kuwait for helping us and people of Sub Traditional Authority Chale for their timely support,” he said.

Prior to the rainy season, The Metrological Department predicted that the southern part of Africa where Malawi lies would be affected by Lanina weather which is associated with flash floods and heavy rains. Flash floods have in the recent past also affected some parts of Lilongwe City and Salima district.
