Then there is once in a life time opportunity. The experience that you will never forget through out your life – that’s Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, says a 2014 fellow Ahmed Sunka.
Begun in 2014, the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, is the flagship program of President Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) that empowers young people through academic coursework, leadership training, and networking. In 2016, the Fellowship will provide 1,000 outstanding young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa with the opportunity to hone their skills at a U.S. higher education institution with support for professional development after they return home.
The Fellows, who are between the ages of 25 and 35, have established records of accomplishment in promoting innovation and positive change in their organizations, institutions, communities, and countries.
“YALI has been a great networking opportunity, meeting like minded people from all across Africa and especially from our own home – Malawi! This platform enhances great leadership skills and exposes you to a new horizon altogether,” says Ahmed Sunka.
Sunka further highlighted some of the great experiences he will never forget.
He said: “Meeting the likes of President Obama, Michelle Obama, John Kerry, Rajiv Shah (head of USAID) and many other important individuals who make an impact across the world is no mean achievement… This has boosted my ambition level together with confidence… Nothing is too big to achieve!
“I encourage all my fellow Malawian brothers and sisters to apply, this could be a career enhancement, personal morale boost and most importantly increase the ability to do more for our communities, towns/villages and Malawi as a whole!”
