Minister of Energy- Malawi , Honorable Ibrahim Matola has asked African governments to prioritize the energy sector.
The Minister made the remarks today at the 15th Africa Energy Indaba at Cape Town Convention Centre in South Africa where he was one of the speakers during a ministerial panel discussion.
According to Matola, African governments must prioritize the energy sector by funding it sufficiently without necessarily waiting for foreign funders.
He says African countries cannot start talking about energy transition at the moment.
“Talking about the energy transition when we are not there yet is quite challenging. Africa is having trouble with access in general. That’s a top priority to me. After ensuring that everyone has access to electricity, we should start discussing the transition. We just need to ensure that the energy industry receives the largest share of the national budget in Africa,” the Minister said.
Matola urged African countries to focus on power-sharing initiatives for the whole continent to light up.
The 15th Africa Energy Indaba Conference that has started today, 7th March, 2023 is discussing , debating and seeking solutions to enable adequate energy generation across Africa under the theme ” Africa Energy Transitioning to a Sustainable and Prosperous Future.”
