MEC Calls for Vote Recount

Malawi Electoral Commission yesterday announced that it plans to recount the votes in the 30 days.

Commissioner Reverend Chimkwita Phiri told reporters in Blantyre that this is following anomalies that have marred the elections.

Reverend Chikwita said the commission discovered serious irregulaties enough to warrant vote recount.

Among other irregulaties, Chimkwita said in about 19 polling centres, a number of voters exceeded those registered.

The exercise will be done in the districts of Blantyre, Lilongwe and Mzuzu, he said.

The commissioner has however assured Malawians that MEC will do everything possible to investigate the matter and punish the perpetrators severe.

Meanwhile, one of the official broadcasters for the Malawi’s 2014 elections Zodiak Broadcasting Station have announced that people should ignore all results announced on their radio station and wait for official results from MEC.

Reports reaching Malawi Muslims Official Website indicate that Malawi’s elections body chairman Justice Maxon Mbendera lost a vote by 10-1 to allow for a vote recount, insiders said according to Mabvuto Banda @bvutoB

@bvutoB: “After Justice Mbendera lost vote, commissioners agreed to go ahead without him and announced the vote recount. #malawielections2014”
