Muslims in the country commend Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) for honouring late Mufti Abbas Qassim with a primary school in Mangochi district.
Muslims say it is important to honour Mufti Abbas regarding to his contributions.
According to Jafaar Phiri it is a welcome development to name the school after Mufti Abbas because he contributed a lot to Islam.
“Mufti Abbas will be remembered for his several achievements in as far as Malawi Muslims are concerned. He taught many sheikhs (Muslim leaders) in the country,” says Jafaar Phiri.
Shakira AbdulMajid says honouring Muslims who contributed to the the success of Islam in Malawi should always be a priority.
“MAM should continue with the approach. Muslims who played important roles to the growth of Islam should always be remembered in our humble Duas as well,” she says.
MAM says Mufti Abbas contributed a lot to Islam hence naming the school after him in the area of Senior Chief Chiwo.
“Mufti Abbas was a well-known Muslim in Malawi. He did a lot of commendable things to our beautiful religion of Islam. That is why MAM thought it wise to name the school after him,” says MAM Deputy National Treasurer Bujard Kalera.
The MAM Deputy National Treasurer says they are also planning to build a secondary school at the same place.
Until his death in January, 2018, Mufti Abbas was a supreme leader of the Council of Muslim Scholars and Sheikhs in Malawi.
Mufti is an Arabic word that means a Muslim legal expert who is empowered to give rulings on religious matters.
