Illovo Sugar Malawi Plc has donated servers and storage systems to Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST). The handover ceremony of the equipment was held on May 29, 2023 at MUST campus in Thyolo.
Receiving the equipment, MUST Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Jonathan Makuwira commended Illovo for the gesture.
“We are grateful for the donation and the servers will help us as an institution to manage our information. Most importantly, the equipment will allow our students to appreciate the dynamics of ICT and advance MUST’s agenda to provide high quality skills in ICT,” he said, adding the servers will also help students to appreciate how they function.
In her remarks, Ms Olive Kawelama, Illovo communications and stakeholder relations officer, said they know the significance of ICT in national development, hence the donation.
“ICT is vital to sustainable development and this is our small way of ensuring that the university is able to function effectively and efficiently,” she said, adding that as a trusted partner of Illovo, MUST deserves the company’s support.
“MUST is one of our partners and for the future of our development and business, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is a key component of the future of agriculture. Technology plays a vital role in sustainability of any agricultural reliant business such as ours. Partnering with MUST is also a way of investing in talent that will be useful in our business as well,” she said.
The equipment will directly benefit the Computer Studies and Information Technology (CSIT) department at MUST.
Through academic programmes under CSIT, MUST seeks to develop outstanding thinkers, leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs and engaged citizens who are able to think critically, act logically and apply knowledge appropriately.
