Muslim girls in Zomba have been urged to work hard in their studies for them to become responsible citizens of this country.
The call was made by Muslim Sisters Youth Organisation (MUSYO) Chairlady Jamila Shareef at a get together meeting held Zomba Development and Education Centre (ZODEC) on Saturday, November 2, 2013.
Jamila advised the girls not to rush into early marriage before completing their studies.
This comes amid reports of high school dropouts amongst Muslim girls in the district.
She therefore said the function was organised in a bid to encourage the students and give them some career guidance.
Apart from encouraging them about education, MUSYO also advised the girls on the importance of proper dressing.
The chairlady noted with a concern that some Muslim girls put on garments that expose their bodies. She therefore advised them to stick to Islamic teachings and not be awashed by worldly things.
MUSYO conducts such kind of meetings at the end of each school term.
Jamila said there has been a major impact since the inception of the initiative.
โWe are now able to assist other girls who have scored higher grades in their MSCE but donโt know what to do next. We try to link them with other organisations that offer scholarships to the needy. We also give them some tips on how they can make it into University of Malawi.
โZomba district of late has also seen many Muslim young girls starting putting on hijab everywhere, the thing which was very difficult in the past,โ said the MUSYO chairlady.
One of the girls who came to attend the function commended MUSYO for the initiative saying it has uplifted her spiritual life.
Halima Abdul Hamid said โa lot of girls were not taking the issue of education seriously but through this kind of groupings things have tremendously changed.โ
