President Peter Mutharika has appealed to Malawians not to listen to those that are politicizing Coronavirus (COVID-19) fight in Malawi.
President Mutharika says human life is sacred, hence all Malawians should be united to fight the disease as a common enemy.
The President says Coronavirus is in every country and anyone who denies the existence of the disease must be sent to the mental hospital or to a lunatic asylum.
Mutharika said the remarks when he was addressing the nation on Coronavirus yesterday at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre.
In his speech, President Mutharika said those politicians who send their people to be denying the existence of Coronavirus, want many Malawians to die saying for once, they should be serious and stop politicizing Coronavirus and pointing fingers.
President Mutharika said his government has strengthened surveillance in all of its border posts and increased the number of testing facilities to five in all regions of the country, targeting to open 15 testing centers in the next one month.
“We want to reach out to as many Malawians and save as many lives as we can. At the same time, we have now opened institutional isolation centers and treatment centers in Blantyre, Lilongwe and Mzuzu,” said Mutharika.
He said his government is acquiring significant amounts of Personal Protective Equipments( PPEs) for health care workers, doing everything it can to fight the pandemic.
Coming to the issue of lockdown, President Mutharika said this matter is before courts and government will proceed to do what is necessary to save lives as circumstances warrant saying the right to life is supreme above all other rights.
Mutharika has restructured special committee on COVID-19 to Presidential response on COVID-19 to be chaired by a Professor in Public Health saying the new committee has also included leader of opposition in Parliament, Robin Lowe, which will be reporting to him directly.
