President Peter Mutharika says his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is ready for fresh presidential elections as ordered by the Constitutional Court on Monday, 3rd February, 2020.
Mutharika made the remarks during his special address on Wednesday, 5th February, 2020.
The Malawi leader says his legal team will appeal against the nullification of the last year’s presidential elections results but DPP is ready to campaign and win the fresh elections.
“Let me however state that we are not appealing to stop the next election. In fact, we are ready to
campaign and win as we have always done,”
“We are appealing to correct the fundamental errors in the
judgement to protect our laws, principles of justice and democracy. We believe the judgement has errors that need to be corrected. Above all, we seek justice,” he says.
Mutharika urges the opposition not to be carried away with the Constitutional Court judgement because the legal battle is not over.
“Let us not be carried away by this court ruling because it is not the end of everything,” he says.
Mutharika acknowledges the supremacy of the constitution and he has urged Malawians to maintain peace and order.
“I want to applaud the leaders of the opposition for taking their electoral grievances to Court as
provided for in our laws. That is democracy,”
“However, I condemn violence in the strongest possible terms and appeal to all Malawians to reject violence. Let us keep calm and order at all times,” he says.
