President Peter Mutharika has warned members of Human Rights Defenders (HRDC) not to dare hold protests at Kamuzu Palace.
HRDC Members led by its leader Timothy Mtambo announced that on March, 25, 2020 they will shut down the State House to force Mutharika sign the Electoral Bills passed by Members of Parliament into Laws.
Reacting to the sentiments, Mutharika told supporters of his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and United Democratic Front (UDF) during a political rally in Blantyre that HRDC’s plans will not be materialised.
He challenged HRDC members not to dare come close to the State House because the police will deal with them if they dare.
According to Mutharika, HRDC Chairperson Timothy Mtambo and other members Gift Trapence, McDonald Sembereka and Billy Mayaya are not bigger than government.
“Be warned, your time is up, the party is over, get up and smell the coffee,” Mutharika said.
This is the first political rally jointly held by DPP and UDF since signing an electoral alliance few weeks ago ahead of fresh elections in May, 2020.
